We made our annual June trip to Roan Mountain a we We made our annual June trip to Roan Mountain a week ago, driving through a torrential downpour on our drive which fortunately stopped after we ate our lunch in our parked car at the trail head to Jane Bald. The light and weather was fabulous for the rest of the afternoon hike, giving us lots of opportunity for some fun photos. The grassy forest just before entering the evergreen forest is one of our favorite spots, and the light was magical!

"Gray’s lily is an herbaceous perennial wildflower in the lily family (Liliaceae) endemic to the Appalachian Mountains. It is an endangered species and listed by both state and federal authorities as imperiled. This lily grows only at high mountain elevations in moist meadows, bogs and seepages. The species epithet honors American botanist Asa Gray (1810–1888), who was based at Harvard University." Reference: NC State Extension website.

The series explores the ghostly, often other worldly images of beaches with driftwood and trees, some still standing along coastal areas of South Carolina and Georgia where forests from previous centuries have been overtaken by the encroaching seas. My earliest photos from this series date back to 2012, our first visit to Botany Bay Plantation in Edisto SC, south of Charleston.
